Net neutrality and the battle for VoIP

Careful observers of the Internet landscape in the last ten years or so were net neutrality less problems as hotly debated over for. Simply put, net neutrality means that telcos handle Internet all traffic in the same way about. This is not how much bandwidth they use, but what they use so obviously people cannot calculate how it seems and many communication actively against it are companies – they want. It isn't quite clear industry watchers who want them, just because they can-, because it is the right thing to do.

For example if my electricity company could somehow determine which device I which makes running'm I buy from them, they can brand that don't like instead of one that they like me free of charge more for the use of a toaster. That sounds outrageous, but somehow they seem to think the Internet is different. You have the right to consumers based on what it it for use and not how much to charge, they use.

This has a direct impact on the adoption of VoIP. In its current form, the traditional source of income of the telecoms company is VoIP. Not only are people more phone calls over the Internet, they use to SMS services free of charge third parties send. Providers around the world have seen their revenues fall this dramatically and they are not happy. Just recently, the leading provider in the Netherlands called announced KPN Telecom which would charge people extra for with VoIP services like Skype using deep packet inspection and find out what applications people use on their Internet connection.

Somehow, telcos like to turn the clock and the Internet in its title to stop if it was not so powerful. If people were still open, to the idea of a charge depending on what they use instead of how much. But now it is too late. As response to KPNs people will charge more for voice a "to introduce a law that makes illegal extra" the Dutch Government will charge for different types of Internet traffic.

Unfortunately, the war in the United States with regard to net neutrality is far from won. The FCC is fighting for Internet services as "Utility" classify, which force him the power to true net neutrality would be. But heavy lobbying by the telecom companies makes this uphill task.

Personally I feel it is too late now to return. People know what is like a free Internet and they are probably not always to look things differently again.
